The King’s Speech
The King’s Speech is a great movie that tells a story about King George VI and the struggle to overcome stammer and find his voice. Watching the move made me think about the expression to “find your voice,” and what it means. Finding your voice is not a matter of the intellect but purely an emotional matter.
Finding means that one was searching. But searching for what? And where does a person look to “find” the voice? My inquiry took me on a little journey of self-examination. When was I searching for my voice and what was I doing to find it?
Finding your own voice means being brave, and finding courage to be authentic. We usually start with a desire to demonstrate something close to our heart but we lack confidence to do it. Then we try to dismiss our desire. But our attempts are only temporary because the heart’s desires are like weeds – always finding their way to the surface. When you try to shut down your heart, life loses its charm and you lose your desire to be in it. Slowly, your desire to express becomes so strong that you start considering how you will do it. Starting to examine your pros and cons, you search through your emotions, working through insecurity and doubt, looking for confidence and courage. You determine what would cost you more: to keep quiet, or to “expose” your self. Once the pain of keeping quiet becomes unbearable, then is when you find the courage to speak up. That is the moment when you find your voice. What follows is a sense of freedom, power, grace, love. Finding you voice gives an amazing set of feelings worth every effort invested in the search.
